The Best Travel Gadgets And Accessories

We are all looking for the best travel gadgets and accessories that we can take with us on our trips without taking up a lot of room in our luggage or carry on. But what is available and where do we find them? I have provided some of the items that you could use during your traveling to make your vacation much more pleasant. You may not need all of them on every trip, but you may need some of them on other trips in the future.

Some of the places that you travel to may have more power outages and electrical surges than other countries.  This could damage some of the electrical devices that you brought along on the trip. Such a bad experience can be avoided with a mini surge protector. I find that the Belkin 3-Outlet Surge Protector is perfect because it not only has the three outlets, but also has two USB ports for your USB devices. It is also compact and easy for packing.

Of course there are concerns that the outlets may be different than in your country so that you may also need a Universal Travel Adapter. With the Universal Travel Adapter, you have most countries’ outlets covered by plugging the adapter into the wall outlet with the appropriate plugs and then you plug your device or the surge protector into this adapter. Using this adapter is more convenient that buying a single usable adapter for a particular country and then another adapter for a different country. This is an all-in-one adapter. This will take up less space in your packing.

If the power output is different in the country that you are visiting than your own country, you may also need a travel size transformer. Make sure you get the right one. There are transformers that convert 220/240v to 110/120v such as the Travel Smart by Conair 50-Watt International Transformer and transformers that convert 110/120v to 220/240v such as Travel Smart by Conair 50-Watt Reverse Transformer. These transformers are also small in size and can easily fit in your luggage or carry on.

If you have many such electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, etc., than you will probably need an external battery charger which will charge your devices when you are not at a location to plug in your devices to recharge them. You will want one that can fill your needs until you get to a hotel room where you can then use the wall outlets. The RAVPower 23000mAh has such abilities and can charge 2 devices at once (it has 2 USB ports) at maximum speeds. There is even an additional multi-voltage port (9V/12V/16V/19V/20V) for devices that may require that. This could even fit in your pocket or purse.

You probably are using tags on your luggage with your name, address, phone number, and maybe even your email written on the tag. This information can be seen by anyone. Now that we are in the electronic age, this information can be kept private. With the use of an trackable luggage tag such as a Dynotag® Web/GPS Enabled QR Tag, you can now have all the information kept privately. You set up the information in the cloud of Dynotag with the code provided with the tag by activating an account. The QR code can be scanned and then with the information you provided, your luggage can be sent to where you are at the moment rather than you home address that you used on the old manual luggage tags. With the use of GPS, any device can scan the tag and send the location of your luggage to your account. Welcome to the 21st century.

Garmin nüvi 2589LMTOne more electronic gadget that can be helpful is a GPS navigator if you plan to rent a car at your destination or if you are planning a vacation by car. I find that I have become so dependent on them that I haven’t used a map in years. I have used one that fits all my needs which is a Garmin nuvi 2589LMT. You can check the review that I have posted in a my blog for more details.

Technology is advancing every day. Credit cards were not even plastic at one time. Now they have magnetic strips and even more recently they are adding chips to the cards now. RFID (radio-frequency identification) chips are now being added to many items including credit cards, passports and identification cards. The purpose is to easily read information from the card wirelessly. That’s right, the card doesn’t even have to be taken out of your pocket. The downside is that there is technology available to thieves that can scan information from your cards wirelessly without you even knowing it. This is called RFID skimming. RFID skimming can present a big problem when traveling. Help is on the way. With an RFID Wallet, you can carry your cards in them which will block the signals and protect you from theft. This is becoming an almost must have item in your travel gadgets.

Travel Organizers

We all need to carry various toiletries on our trip. I used to pack them in plastic ziplock bags to prevent leakage getting into other items in my luggage. Now I use a travel toiletries bag which is very efficient on space with compartments for various products. It is also water resistant. It even has a hook and handle for easy hanging on towel racks or shower rods. The organization is a plus and I usually just function right out of the bag.

Compression Packing Cubes are another accessory that can really keep the size of your luggage down. You would be amazed how much can be packed in these compression cube sets. With careful planning, you can pack all you need in a size that will qualify for carry on; thereby giving you the freedom of not having to check in your luggage (not to mention that there may be a fee for checked luggage). Travel light and smart.

When traveling on a long trip by plane, it can be hard to sleep if you are tired. Some people do well while sitting up, but I have a problem with this. A comfortable travel pillow is a great help. The Travelrest Travel Pillow is easy to pack and very comfortable. I like the long Ultimate Travel Pillow which provides full lateral support. Don’t be taken back by its size, It is a blow up pillow and therefore can easily be stored deflated until you are ready to use it. It’s long design fits across the torso or down the side. Of course the Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow is also available for those who prefer that type. This one has memory foam for comfortable support. Both are easy to pack.

These are a few ideas on the best travel gadgets and accessories. There are always new products available every day to make our travel life easier. I would enjoy any items that you would like to share with me and our other readers. Happy Traveling!

  1. You must have traveled a lot to know all this stuff. Pretty cool. I will come back to check your site before my next trip to Europe. Do you know by any chance what type of outlets are used in Spain or I can just have the universal one ? Thank you.

    1. John,

Great hearing from you. Yes, I do like to travel often and pick up things as I go. I enjoy sharing this with others which is why I have this website. Spain uses plug type C or F (which is a two prong plug with rounded prongs). Spain runs on 220 volts and 50 Hertz. The type of conversion that you would need depends on where you come from because your electrical devices would be designed to run in the country that you live in. If you come from the USA, you would be used to running 110 volts and 60 Hertz, thereby requiring a device which converts the electrical power to your devices and also the type of plug. The best bet is to use a universal kit and then you can be ready to switch to any country that you visit (just in case you decide to branch out from Spain).

I wish you the best in your travels.

  2. Hi Bob, I think you have a great website, really helpful especially for those that are not seasoned travellers, like me. I found it very interesting, one thing that I thought was a great gadget and that was the RFID Wallet. I love the look of your website and you seem to cover all aspects of travelling, well done. All the best, Kerry

    1. Hi Kerry,

I am glad that you dropped by. The RFID Wallet was a great find and I use it all the time and not just when traveling. Anyone can hack your info even when you are in a local shopping mall. I feel more comforted with the knowledge that my cards and ID are safe. It also is so compact and holds a lot making it easy to fit in my pocket.

I am grateful that you found the website attractive and please feel free to drop by again.

  3. I think you have a solid website here. I like the many options you offer and the descriptions of each. This is a comprehensive and helpful website.Your webpages are easy to navigate and your articles are easy to understand. I especially appreciate your cheap discount flights section, I had not heard of the websites you link before and since I am going to be a student soon, I am really glad to find there are discounts for students available!
    Keep up the good work!

    1. Hammer,

I am glad that you found this website helpful. Everyone is always looking for cheap discount flights. Most people have heard of Expedia and Travelocity, but I like to find deals by searching beyond those obvious sites and sharing them with my readers. Stop by again as we come up with more opportunities and deals.

  4. Hi

Some of the things on here are great, I travel a lot and the best way to cope with being constantly on the road is to make everything feel like home.

I’m sure there’s a few things on here I could pick up to make my travel life a lot easier.

    1. Ben,

I appreciate you comments and glad that you stopped by. There are things here in this review that many people will find that they need. You can pick up any of the items that I reviewed here. I provided links to all the items that I suggested to make it easier to find any of these items. It is always great to make life easier even when you are traveling.

  5. Hi,

When I was 22, many moons ago, I landed in an apartment in Germany. Imagine my surprise when i found out my stuff would not plug in or work.

Granted, back then there was less to plug in but it would have been nice to have the transformer you speak of.

I like the navigator also. I have never been good with directions and would be lost, literally, without one.

From your tips I assume you like to and travel often. Some of the items on your site would not even be considered by the inexperienced traveler until they find out they really need them.

Happy trails my friend and thanks for the ideas.

    1. Barry,

Thanks for dropping by. I hope some of these items can be useful to you. It is true that many travelers may not even know about some of these gadgets until they read my review. It is like Steve Jobs said: “They don’t know what they want until you tell them”. Of course, I am referring to the fact that they may know that they need it, but did not know that there was something out there to fulfill this need. I do like to travel and enjoy passing things that I have learned to my readers. Happy Traveling!
